Yokohama Shintoshi Center Co., Ltd. carried out the "BITT ART PROJECT" — an initiative to revitalize 25 Bitt Objects that have watched over the city for approximately 40 years since the opening of the Yokohama Shintoshi Building, with the aim of enhancing the appeal and improving the streetscape of the Yokohama Station East Exit area. I was responsible for the design of the Bitts. The "Bitt" — a bollard used to moor ships — is a symbol of Yokohama as a port city. Many of these objects are installed on the pedestrian deck connecting to Sogo Yokohama Store. As an initiative to give new purpose to these iconic objects, which had deteriorated significantly over the years, a citizen-participatory Bitt Object regeneration art workshop was held. The 25 Bitt Objects were painted, and finally given "eyes" to be reborn as characters — each with a different expression and story to tell. The idea was to bring into the cityscape presences that gently look back at you. Please do look out for the Bitts on your way to K Arena or whenever you pass by!

横浜新都市センター株式会社は、横浜駅東口エリアの魅力向上と景観改善を目的に、横浜新都市ビル開業以来約40年にわたり街を見守ってきたビットオブジェ25体をアートとして再生する「BITT ART PROJECT」を実施しました。私は、ビットのデザインを担当しました。港町・横浜を象徴する「ビット」は、船を係留するための柱。そのオブジェが、そごう横浜店につながるペデストリアンデッキにたくさん設置されています。経年により劣化が進んでいた象徴的オブジェに、新たな役割を与える取り組みとして、市民参加型のビットオブジェ再生アートワークショップを開催しました。ビットオブジェ25体にペイントを施し、最後に“目”を入れてキャラクターとして再生。それぞれが違う表情と物語を持つ存在になりました。街の中に、少しだけ視線が返ってくるような存在を。Kアリーナに行く途中など、ぜひビットたちも見つけてみてください。
